A series of temporary parking and waiting restrictions are to be put in place before the opening of Beverley’s new Flemingate shopping complex.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council is to introduce the temporary restrictions to help local residents and businesses and to ensure safe and smooth movements on roads around the new development, which is expected to attract increased traffic to the area, and to help deal with the rush of people using the complex for the first time.
The action is a temporary measure prior to consultation on the council’s proposed plans to extend Beverley’s existing Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) and introduce a permit parking scheme to cover the streets in the vicinity of the development, which is part of the agreed planning approval attached to the Flemingate development.
The temporary restrictions – which mostly involve laying double yellow lines, loading restrictions and marked unrestricted parking bays – will be introduced in Armstrong Way, Flemingate, Grovehill Road, Trinity Grove, Cherry Tree Lane, Chantry Lane, Priory Road, St Nicholas Road, Blucher Lane and Beckside.
The council has instructed a road marking contractor to make the necessary road marking changes between Saturday 31 October and Monday 2 November 2015.
Temporary traffic cones will be placed on-street to enable the contractor to undertake the road marking works.
A major consultation exercise will soon begin in order to progress the extension of the Beverley CPZ into the area surrounding the new complex.
Residents and businesses will also shortly be sent questionnaires on the proposals to extend the CPZ and the council is keen for people to complete the forms when delivered.
The council will ensure that all comments are considered before the details of the CPZ extension are finalised.
It is the council’s intention to implement the extended CPZ, subject to consultation and statutory periods of advertisement, by the end of May 2016, with the introduction of the permit parking scheme.
A spokesman for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:
“These temporary parking restrictions will help to improve the management of traffic and parking in the streets within the vicinity of the Flemingate development, before we can consult on the extension of the CPZ.
“Residents and businesses in the area have already experienced some access problems because of increased traffic during the construction of the development, and we hope these restrictions will help to address those problems.”
