On 9 December, Bishop Burton will be hosting a free cardiac screening for its students and the local community, to raise awareness of undiagnosed heart conditions in young people.
Every week, 12 young people aged 35 and under, die suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition. Over 80% of these young people have no signs or symptoms and so the only way to detect a potentially life-threatening cardiac abnormality is by having a screening test.
The screenings will be completed free of charge by the charity, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), and is kindly being funded by the Josh Fell Memorial Fund – the son of a college lecturer who died unexpectedly of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome (SADS) aged just 15.
James Earl, Director of Sport at Bishop Burton College says the screenings are vitally important to young people;
“These screenings are of particular importance to young people as cardiac disease can often go undetected. I’m really proud that we’re tackling these risks head on and providing what could be a vital service to our students and the wider community. I would like to thank the Josh Fell Memorial Fund for making this happen.”
Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by YSCD.
CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research. The charity also funds fast track referral, screening and cardiac pathology services at leading UK hospitals.
