When looking for a new pet you might consider adding a dog or cat to your family, or if you are not ready for that commitment, perhaps a hamster or a fish? But, have you considered something perhaps a little more exotic? There are many benefits to owning an exotic pet and they are extremely fascinating creatures.
So, before you start searching through the puppies or kittens for sale from Freeads, here are six exotic pets you didn’t know you wanted, but you may find yourself looking for, after reading this!
- Snake
For many the thought of even being near a snake makes them shiver with fear. But, did you know snakes actually make great pets? They are mesmerising creatures and with regular handling can be quite tame and docile. Snakes can live for 20 years, and like many other exotic creatures have very unique requirements, you must for example, be prepared to feed prey animals to your snake. If you are new to owning snakes you may want to consider Corn Snakes, King and Milk Snakes or Ball Pythons.
- Bearded Dragon
Bearded dragons are moderately sized lizards and popular pets for those new to owning reptiles. They are social, easy to tame and handle and their fascinating behaviors make them incredibly interesting to watch.
- Tortoise
Although tortoises don’t come cheap and need a fair amount of care, as they prepare for and later come out of hibernation, they are extremely fascinating and quirky creatures. They do, of course, sleep for half the year, however they can live for well over a hundred years, meaning they are with you for a long time and can be passed down through generations of your family. So, you (and especially young kids, if you have them) don’t have the pain of losing a pet after only a few years together.
- Leopard Gecko
Leopard Geckos are ideal for those new to reptile care as they are one of the easiest lizards to keep. They have a docile nature and beautiful mottled skin, which makes them extremely popular. One of the main benefits of this breed of Gecko is that is doesn’t need as much space as other lizards and can live for more than 20 years.
- Parrot
If you want a pet you can talk to and actually get a response, a parrot is the one for you (although be aware not all parrots speak, and some more than others – if this is the only reason you want one.) They do need far more interaction, than many other exotic pets, so if you are looking for a pet you can bond with in the way you would a cat or dog, this could be the exotic creature you didn’t know you wanted.
- Chameleon
Chameleons dislike being handled, so if you are looking for a pet that needs little interaction these are perfect. They do however have very specific requirements and therefore aren’t ideal for beginners. However, if you have researched them thoroughly and are prepared to put in the time and effort they are an incredibly interesting pet. The most striking thing about them is their ability to change a wide range of colours, from turquoise to green and even black.
Exotic pets do have very specific social and environmental needs, therefore you must ensure you have a full understanding of their requirements before you purchase one, otherwise you could end up with more than you bargained for. Do your research before making your purchase and ensure you’re ready for such an exciting addition to your family.
