Children at Cherry Burton Pre-school swapped their usual snacks of fruit and vegetables for “neeps and tatties” this week, to celebrate Burns Night.

As well as tucking into this tasty fayre, children also spent time learning about Scotland, singing songs, and learning how to do Scottish Dancing to traditional Scottish music.

“It’s been great fun,” said Pre-school Manager, Claire Newton. “The children love getting involved in the dancing and they are always keen to try new food! It’s just a way of bringing learning to life for the children, so they really understand what we are trying to show them. We do lots of work exploring other cultures, but it is just as important to help children understand about our own culture and the traditions in Britain.”

Celebrating Burns Night is just one of a series of activities that children at this popular Pre-school get involved in to learn and understand about British values.

Zoe Moon, mum of Cooper Moon, who attends Pre-school is very happy about the array of activities on offer for children. She commented:

“Every week there is something brilliant going on. Today children have celebrated Burns Night and had great fun, tomorrow they are celebrating Australia Day and will be baking, and making flags.”

“Next week is the start of celebrations for Chinese New Year. Cooper loves telling me about his day at Pre-school, and I am always so impressed by how much he has learnt and understood.”

Sally Granger is Chair of the Pre-school committee, and she praised the work of the staff who strive to ensure the curriculum is as varied and as inspiring as possible:

“Claire and her team always look for new and exciting ways to engage children with the curriculum. This results in happy, confident children who love to learn. This week is a busy one but is no exception: we also have some really brilliant activities planned for the rest of the year which we know children will enjoy too.”

All of these activities are part of the Pre-school’s work to help children understand the world around them, which is a key part of the curriculum for Pre-schools.
