Visitors to Beverley Art Gallery have been casting their votes for their favourite piece of artwork in this year’s Open Art exhibition.
This year the winner was Jane Beharrell with her painting ‘John’. The prize was kindly donated by the Friends of Beverley Art Gallery and presented by their Chairman, James Godfrey.
Born in Hull but now based in Beverley, Jane entered the Open Art exhibition last year as well. She currently has another exhibition planned for April 2016, to be housed in Beverley Minster.
Jane says:
“This painting is part of a series of portraits of immediate friends and family. I wanted to paint John in a moment of quietness, lost in his own thoughts. His face is brightly lit while the deep shadows and flat dark background reflect the inward mood of the painting.”
Gerardine Mulcahy-Parker, curator, added:
“It is a fine portrait and demonstrates sound technique and a skilled use of the medium (oil on wood).”
The open exhibition will run again in November – giving local artists plenty of time to get creative.
