For more than half a century, the Federation of British Artists, based at Mall Galleries in London, has championed contemporary figurative art – art based on recognisable objects such as a portrait or a landscape.
Every year, to identify emerging artists with the ability and potential to influence the future of figurative art, the Federation sends its established artists to degree shows nationwide. The hope is to find graduate artists making exciting forms of figurative work which explore new boundaries and ‘prod’ the movement in new directions.
A new exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery opening this Saturday (20 February), with exhibits from across the United Kingdom, will feature works by these new graduates – an affirmation that figurative art has an exciting future ahead.
The exhibition opens on Saturday 20 February and runs until Saturday 23 April. Beverley Art Gallery is located in the Treasure House in Champney Road, and is open, free of charge, from Monday to Saturday.
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said:
“I am delighted that we are able to put on this exhibition, which is another example of our exciting partnership with the Mall Galleries, and allowing us to bring the work of these exciting new artists to the East Riding.”
Gerardine Mulcahy-Parker, curator, added:
“This exhibition will be a wonderful opportunity to see works by recognised talent at the outset of their careers! I strongly urge our visitors not to miss it!”
The exhibition will run alongside another new exhibition opening this Saturday: ‘Aerofilms : Britain from above’.
