Bishop Burton College is throwing open its doors to visitors on the 6th March, Mother’s Day, to show off its first lambs of the season.
Lambing Sunday, the College’s annual springtime spectacle, gives the public the opportunity to pet newborn lambs, help with feeding and see the birth of new lambs up close.
College Chief Executive and Principal, Jeanette Dawson OBE, is delighted to be able to share the experience of lambing with the public.
“We have over seven hundred ewes at the College, all of which are expected to lamb in a three-week window and the date we have chosen for the event is right in the middle of that period.
“It’s fantastic to watch a lamb being born – seeing them taking their first few steps and bonding with their mothers is truly magical. Our farm staff and students will be on hand to explain the lambing process throughout the day, so it’s a really educational day, too!
“The event also has a serious side as provides the general public with unique access to a working farm and find out about what is involved in farming and where our food comes from.”
Over the last five years, the event has grown to become one of the biggest lambing events in the county. More than 8,000 people came along to last year’s Lambing Sunday to witness hundreds of lambs take their first steps, so make sure you arrive early – gates open from 11am until 3pm. Ticket are priced at £7 (adult) and £5 (under 16s), or £20 for a family of four.
In addition to the exciting lambing shed, the College will also be hosting a number of other activities across its vast campus. From show jumping and horse petting, to farm machinery displays, pig unit tours and animal petting in our animal management unit, there’s something to entertain all the family.
Get up close with our famous meerkats, find out about our family of lemurs and hop along to our wallaby enclosure for a petting experience and animal talks. And for the more adventurous guests, there’ll be the chance to hug a bug and snuggle a snake. What’s more, for just £5 per person, guests can also experience a unique feeding experience with some of our more exotic campus wildlife.
With a host of activities for children, young and old, and a host of dining packages available to pre-order, there’s no better way to spend this year’s Mother’s Day.
Please note, pregnant women are advised not to attend this event. No dogs allowed except display and guide dogs.
