Tesco has selected Grovehill Area Action Group’s scheme as one of the three local finalists in its “Bags of Help” community awards.
This new funding comes from the sale of carrier bags and is designed to improve community green spaces.
The nominated Grovehill Heritage Trail & Wildlife Project aims to improve public access to Beverley’s Swinemoor and Figham Commons by creating a connecting ‘green corridor’ along the banks of the River Hull – providing information boards along the way to celebrate important industrial heritage sites.
Special attention will be given to Grovehill Shipyard, the home of hundreds of Beverley-built trawlers, tugs, and other vessels. This includes the ‘Viola’, the only surviving steam trawler, that campaigners plan to rescue from South Georgia.
Grovehill Area Action Group intends working in co-operation with present day industries and commercial organisations in the Grovehill district, as well as environmental groups, the local authority, and community volunteers.
In seeking collaborative partners a spokesperson for the planning group stressed the need for prompt action in order to complete the initial phase by April 2017.
“We aim to achieve genuine improvements to the environment for the benefit of wildlife, visitors, and ordinary Beverley people – especially walkers and their families”.
Tesco shoppers will be invited to vote in stores for their favourite scheme between Saturday 27th February and Sunday 6th March 2016 with £12,000 going to the winning project, £10,000 for second place, and £8,000 for third place.
