Hull 2017’s Community Roadshow has been in Beverley to spread the word about what promises to be an exciting year in Beverley’s neighbouring city Hull.
Representatives from Hull 2017 and from East Riding of Yorkshire Council were on hand to answer questions put to them by numerous people who attended the road show.
Rosie Millard who is the chair of Hull City of Culture 2017 was also in Beverley, and explaining why they came to Beverley she said;
“The road show has come out of Hull and is visiting over 20 different places to promote 2017 so people can find out more about what is going on and sign up to be a volunteer. This one is in the East Riding because the East Riding is part of the city of culture.”
East Riding of Yorkshire Council showed their commitment by signing up to be a key partner investing £1 million into Hull 2017 saying at the time, it provided numerous benefits for residents while also presenting a great opportunity to showcase the area nationally and globally.
Speaking about the backing from the council Rosie said;
“The local authority have been very generous. We are delighted they are one of our partners. I think it is right because Hull is the host city, but we want events to happen around the area.”
“Take the Humber Bridge for example, it is in the East Riding. Beverley is a wonderful asset to the East Riding. It’s a wonderful town. It has got peerless architecture and people who come to see things in 2017 may want to come and visit Beverley.”
“It would be rather sad if there were no posters up or sign that Beverley was joining in with the fun, I think it’s very nice that we can embrace East Riding in our year.”
When asked about how Beverley could get involved Rosie praised the town for its already busy annual event’s calendar, established events, she is confident can benefit from Hull 2017. Rosie said;
“I think there are already quite are a lot events in Beverley that will get an uplift by happening in 2017, like The Beverley Folk Festival, the races and things that happen at the Beverley Minster.”
“With Hull expecting 1 million extra visitors over the year obviously some of those people will come to Beverley participate in the events helping their capacity grow so they can also get stronger.”
Rosie herself has experience some of the events staged in Beverley, including Beverley Races, an experience she described as a real treat, she said;
“Beverley races was amazing. I actually got to give an award to a winner, and that was very exciting. I was invited by the team at the races, and it was a real treat.”
“Going gave me a chance to see what is an important part of the annual culture that goes on here. Beverley Races is a big part of life in Beverley, and it really was great fun to be at the meet.”
