Paddy Sweeney Celebrates 95th Birthday

Paddy Sweeney, the well known retired veterinary surgeon who lives at Newbegin House in Beverley, has celebrated his 95th birthday with a lunch for close family and friends at Cerutti’s Restaurant.

Mr. Sweeney, who qualified in Dublin in 1945 and for many years practised in Warwickshire as a leading bone surgeon specializing in the treatment of greyhounds from all over the UK, as well as giving lectures, writing articles and providing weekend training courses for other vets, has lived in Beverley for the last ten years with his wife Jane a 96 year old retired head teacher, farmer, market gardener, village shop keeper and post mistress, his son Walter, a solicitor, 5 star B&B proprietor and former Conservative MP and daughter in law Nuala a consultant radiologist and his three grand daughters Siobhán, Lucy and Hannah.

For Mr. and Mrs. Sweeney, it was also a double celebration as it was their 68th. wedding anniversary. Addressing the guests at the private lunch, Mr. Sweeney praised the fabulous food and service provided by Mr. Tony Cerutti and his staff.

He also thanked Jane for being a wonderful wife and paid tribute to their three sons, Walter, Warwick a photographer in London and Simon a senior lecturer at York University his 3 daughters in law and his eight grandchildren.

“Jane and I have been very happy in Beverley, which is a wonderful place to live. My only real regret is that I retired when I was 75, instead of keeping on working” Mr. Sweeney commented.
