A host of events and visits will be held next week to mark East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Recycle Week 2016 (June 13-19).
From Monday 13 June the council’s waste and recycling officers will be out and about offering advice and information – and residents will also have the chance to win a composter for their garden.
The officers will be taking their recycling trailer to Pocklington, Bridlington, Beverley and Anlaby, and setting up a standing in Goole, to promote household recycling and advise residents how to reduce waste around the home.
The theme of this year’s Recycle Week is food waste and the officers will be encouraging people to recycle more of their everyday unwanted food by putting it in their brown bins.
Residents have the chance to win one of three home composters by entering a free prize draw. To enter all people need to do is visit the recycling trailer and pledge to recycle more food in their brown bin.
A waste and recycling officer will also be visiting Westfield School in Cottingham next week to meet the members of its Eco Lunch Club and get them involved in Recycle Week activities including planting seeds in recycled yogurt pots and ice cream tubs.
Councillor Symon Fraser, East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said: “Residents in the East Riding have always been incredibly supportive of recycling, but Recycle Week is all about encouraging them to do that little bit extra.
“People who use their kitchen caddy and brown bin for all their cooked and uncooked food waste are really helping the environment because all that waste, along with garden waste, is recycled into compost.
“Next week’s visits are a great opportunity for residents to come along and talk to our officers directly about all aspects of recycling and waste.”
The waste and recycling officers will be in Beverley on Saturday 18 June at Saturday Market, 10am onwards.
They will be on hand to speak to anyone with waste and recycling issues or questions, take requests for blue bins and kitchen caddies, and will also be handing out information leaflets.
No appointment is necessary, residents can just go along to the recycling trailer or stand during the day.
The council’s waste and recycling officers are also available, all year round, to do talks and presentations for community groups and schools across the East Riding. Anyone wanting more details or to book can contact the team by email at wastewatchers@eastriding.gov.uk or call them on 01482 395388.
