Beverley Braves Remain Unbeaten As They Win Well At Home

Beverley Braves under 14s unbeaten league run continued with a 48 nil win over Hull Victoria Titans who to their credit put up a spirited display and deserved more from the game.

Beverley got on the score sheet early when in the first set, a lovely long pass to his left by Marcus Walker found William Wallis in space, and he crashed over in the left corner to make it 4 nil.

Just six minutes later the same combination saw Walker draw the man to put Wallis in at the left corner, and it was 8 nil. Victoria have improved as this season has progressed, and they had a good period in the game defending well and asking a few questions of the Braves defence for whom Ollie Loney was top tackler over the whole match with George Bennett-Teare building on recent weeks with another solid tackling stint. At the back Ben Hodder had a brilliant game taking any kicks the Titans made with great confidence and running the ball out from his own line well.

After 19 minutes, Walker popped the ball up nicely for Kai Johnson to run on to and with only 10 metres to go to the line he is unstoppable, with the conversion the Braves were now 14 nil up. More good defence from the Titans kept Beverley at bay for a further 10 minutes but quick distribution from hooker Jack Turner on the back of good drives up field from Bennett- Teare and Will Swainston set up the position for Walker to put in a cross field kick.

The Titans defender fumbled it under pressure from Tom Cohen leaving Johnson the simple task of touching down the loose ball. 20 nil with Walker’s conversion. With just seconds left until the half-time whistle Harry Vorwerg saw the opportunity to scoot from acting half back and found himself in clear space, with his pace that can only mean one thing, and he scored under the sticks. Turner’s conversion making it 26 nil, a score line that was a little cruel on the Titans.

It was back to the Walker-Wallis show early in the second half, the former popping up the ball for the latter to score wide on the left again, Turner coolly slotting over the conversion. Minutes later, it was that combination again. Walker had all the time in the world to put in an inch perfect cross field kick which Wallis sprang spectacularly to grab and score his fourth of the day.

Henry Hughes showed his versatility once again, after playing in the front row for some of the game last week this week he was filling in at half-back, he showed great skill to change the direction of play to run diagonally to the left-hand corner without a finger being placed on him – 42 nil.

Titans then had a period of sustained pressure, four consecutive sets of six required a huge defensive effort, twice William Kirkup tackled his opposite number to stop a good attacking move. Ethan Rowbotham, who by now had switched from second row to hooker, and Tom Baker put in a great defensive stint at this point whilst Ryan Deane brought the ball out well from a dangerous situation to help keep the Braves line intact.

Finally, the Braves had some more possession and after Johnson had barged his way up field it was left to Archie Murdoch, who had seen little ball as the Braves attacked mainly on the left, to pick up the ball from acting half-back and race forty metres to score under the posts.

Final Score: Beverley Braves 48 Hull Victoria Titans 0
