‘Beverley on Film’, a new free exhibition presenting aspects of the history of the town on film, will open at Beverley Guildhall on Friday, 22 July, and run until Friday, 18 November, 2016.
The exhibition includes a series of films from Yorkshire Film Archive, put together especially for the Guildhall : ‘Beverley Salutes the Soldier’ features footage of military marches, Warship Week and Spitfire fundraising; ‘Around the Town’ looks at Beverley’s stunning architecture; ‘Beverley at Play’ features scout and youth club activities, horse racing, and the Four-Centenary Charter Festival; whilst ‘Beverley at Work’ includes the tannery and the shipyard.
In addition, two productions from Ernest Symmons will be screened in full – an early road safety film from 1958 called ‘Man with a Notebook’, and ‘Beverley through the Ages’ from 1937.
Many of the films were originally supplied to the Yorkshire Film Archive by the East Riding Sound and Film Archive.
Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, said:
“This promises to be a fascinating exhibition, both for people with memories of Beverley who can relive them with these films, and for young visitors who will be seeing these images on film for the first time.”
Beverley Guildhall is open every Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 4pm, and admission is free. The films will be screened on both days, so there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to see both films.
There are also special screening events at the Parkway Cinema, Beverley, on 21 July at 1pm and 7pm. Tickets cost £5 each from Parkway Cinema online, or by calling 01482 968090.
The Parkway Cinema is located on Flemingate, and the Guildhall is in Register Square, adjacent to the main post office.
