A Charity worker from Beverley will take fundraising to the extreme when she takes part in a ‘wing walk’ to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.
Adrienne Hodgson, the charity’s Regional Fundraiser for East Yorkshire, will be strapped to the top wing of a 1940s Boeing Stearman Biplane and flown around Breighton Aerodrome, Selby, at speeds of up to 135mph.
The 49-year-old has lost a stone in weight to be able to take part in the challenge, which will involve a variety of flypasts and manoeuvres, including a dive from 500ft and a ‘zoom’ climb.
Adrienne’s mother died from breast cancer at the age of 53 and more recently her aunt passed away from the disease.
Adrienne said:
“It’s my 50th birthday this year and I wanted to do something to celebrate and to help others. I don’t like water and I can’t run far so decided something drastic had to be done. A wing walk seemed a good idea.
“It will be an exhilarating experience and I’m looking forward to and dreading it in equal measures. It’s only 10 minutes out of my life that may make a life changing moment in someone else’s.”
Adrienne will take part in her wing walk on Saturday, August 6. She hopes to raise £700 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, which aims to improve cancer outcomes in Yorkshire by raising awareness of cancer and how to prevent it, promoting screening programmes to increase early detection and funding innovative research projects, from diagnosis to end-of-life care.
