Longcroft Students Celebrate After Getting Their A-Level Results

Students at Longcroft School were celebrating after a many achieved the A-Level results needed to get the university places of their choice.

Madeleine Rann was grinning from ear to ear when she learned of her results as she picked up an A in Chemistry & Mathematics and an A* in Biology.

Another top performer was Samrat Prasai who achieved two A’s and an A* while Joanne Cook also excelled getting a A* in Mathematics and Physics and an A in Chemistry.

Overall the number of students throughout the UK who have got the grades needed to enter university has increased by 3pc compared to last year’s results.

Again as with previous years it is the girls who tend to get better results than the boys however for the first time in five years the gap between girls and boys has narrowed.

Nick Gibb, the School standards minister said;

“We want to make our country a place where there is no limit on anyone’s ambition or what they can achieve.”

“It is hugely encouraging that this year sees a record 424,000 applicants already securing a place at one of our world-class universities.”

The Ucas admissions services says that 424,000 places have been offered, an increase of 3pc on this day last year.

Nationally there are some interesting figures when it comes to A-Levels.  More than 92,000 students took A-level maths again this year, making it the most popular subject among students followed by English, a subject which almost 85,000 students sat in 2016.

Science subjects also retained their place in the top 10 as did psychology, art and design and sociology.

However subjects some subjects saw in dip in the number of students choosing to take those topics with  8.8pc fewer students taking music A-level, and a staggering 33% drop in entries to art and design subjects at AS-Level.
