From Sewerby To The Somme – A Talk In Beverley

Treasure House

As part of a series of events to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, there will be a talk at the Treasure House entitled ‘From Sewerby to the Somme: A Servant’s Tale’, by Robert Chester, Education Officer at Sewerby Hall and Gardens.

Against the backdrop of the war record of John Howson Graham, who was Sewerby Hall’s butler, Robert will talk about the often neglected autumn campaigns of the Battle of the Somme.

John Howson Graham enlisted as an artilleryman under the Derby Scheme in November 1915. As a member of the 169th Brigade, Royal Garrison Artillery, his unit was sent to the Somme just 11 months later in support of the attacks on the infamous Butte de Warlencourt.

Using first-hand accounts from the men who were there and other evidence, Robert will piece together a narrative of the closing stages of the battle, a period often overshadowed by the terrible events at the battle’s start.

The event takes place on Tuesday 6 September from 6.30pm in the Education Room at the Treasure House, Champney Road, Beverley.

Tickets are £5.00 per person and can be booked by calling (01482) 392699 (Mon-Fri) or by visiting the Archives at the Treasure House.

Any remaining tickets will be available on the door on the day of the event.
