Heritage Open Day At The Beverley Treasure House

Treasure House

On Saturday 10 September between 9 and 4pm, The Treasure House in Beverley will be celebrating Heritage Open Day.

Visitors can discover fascinating stories from history and find out about the larger than life characters who lived in East Yorkshire in times past, through archives, books and objects in the collections.

Sarah Hammond, education officer, said :

“Enjoy exploring behind-the-scenes, visiting different parts of the building where our collections are cared for and stored, so future generations can continue to tell the tales of our past. There will be a number of tours, which can be booked on the day, taking visitors to the museum and archive repositories.

“Museum staff will explain to those on the tours about the various items used in picture care and exhibition hanging such as brushes and mini vacuums. Guided by an archivist, the tours are a chance to look at the extraordinary range of documents we care for at the Treasure House.”

A selection of unique and intriguing historical documents will be on view in the research room to explore and bring these stories to life. There will be a special display about the hazards that some museum artefacts present, and how the museum resolves these, along with an object identification challenge.

Especially for younger visitors and their families, there will be hands-on craft activities and a trail.

Councillor Richard Burton, portfolio holder for civic wellbeing and culture, added :

“The day promises to be filled with fascinating insights, for adults and children alike, into the day to day work of the Treasure House and an exciting opportunity to see some of the gems in our collections and the wonderful and engaging stories they tell.”

The café will be open until 4pm . For more information call 01482 392780, 392790 or visit www.museums.eastriding.gov.uk
