Beverley Woman Admits Dangerous Dog Charge

A Beverley woman has been given a conditional discharge by a court after her dog bit a stranger on his leg causing a significant injury.

Geraldine Curran, 48 of Wood Lane, Beverley appeared at Beverley Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 15 September where she pleaded guilty to one charge of allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place.

The court heard how on 16 February, 2016, a border terrier named Molly, ran out of Curran’s property onto the public footpath and bit the victim on the back of his calf.

Curran was given a 12 month conditional discharge and ordered to pay compensation of £400, costs of £400 and a victim surcharge of £15.

Magistrates also ruled that the dog must be muzzled and on a lead whenever it is in a public place.

David Howliston, environmental control manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:

“Dog owners have a responsibility to make sure their pets do not present a risk of other people getting hurt.

“If we do receive complaints about irresponsible dog ownership and an offence has been committed, we will have no hesitation in prosecuting.”
