I am standing as an Independent candidate in St. Mary’s by election and, if elected, this means I would be able to act with the interests of our community at heart and would not be adhering to party policies or colours whether red, yellow, blue, purple or green.
My day to day life brings me into contact with many residents whether walking on the Westwood, teaching Pilates or volunteering at the East Riding Theatre and a local school. What I don’t hear directly about people’s concerns I learn from the very active town network whether it be social media, the radio or our local publications.
There are major concerns afoot presently about the extensive building programmes scheduled for the town and the potential loss of sporting facilities. Although every Council has to produce a Local Plan detailing how they will incorporate new housing over the next 15 years, it is important that the residents are consulted (and listened to) when these plans are implemented.
It is unrealistic to expect that one Independent voice can effect major change in a local government dominated by one political party and neither could any minority candidate. However, as an independent voice I can bring a refreshing, new perspective on issues and bring local opinion directly into the discussions.
Although any monopoly is unhealthy, I do not believe our town is as doom ridden as some election leaflets would suggest. Yes, proposed building is a great concern but we have a wonderful town ably supported by its residents. Our churches, theatre, charity shops, scouts, guides, many sporting clubs and additional transport for the needy are all run by volunteers.
These people take great pride in their work and I believe these are the ones who should be running these services. ERYC should continue to provide essential services and encourage organisations to apply for allocated funding. We even have a designated worker at ERVAS who helps negotiate the difficult funding application process.
Another positive note is news of a large youth project that is currently proceeding with support from major institutions in the town.
I feel that Beverley residents want a candidate who will continually address their concerns and work to find a solution.
My campaign is a zero waste one so you will not have received any leaflets from me. I have saved many trees and the money that would have been spent on election materials is going to a local charity, Community Lift.
Please consider voting for an independent voice, not an underdog, sympathy vote or inexperienced outsider, simply a truly independent voice who will work with and for you.
