Shows To Surprise And Delight At ERT in Beverley

One of the most original and innovative shows you’ll have seen in years – that’s the promise for “No Angel Uncensored”, coming to the East Riding Theatre, Beverley, for one night only on Saturday October 29 after critically-acclaimed performances in London.

This is a no holds barred, full-on performance that’s shamelessly sexy and murderously funny. It features Charlie Bicknell, who became a household name playing Delilah in BBC2’s “This Life” before moving into cabaret.

With her trademark dark sense of humour and rebellious joie de vivre, she is joined on stage by the internationally-acclaimed mezzo soprano Louise Innes. Songs range from Tim Minchin to Meatloaf, Jacques Brel to Bizet, including acrobatic antics whilst simultaneously singing!

Charlie has been described by The Observer as “A one woman weapon of mass distraction”. With exceptional pianist David Harrod and Jez Brodie, an ex- postman turned circus strongman, completing the cast, No Angel Uncensored is a never predictable, magnificent evening’s entertainment.

More surprises are in store when, four days later, ERT welcomes a production linked only by its superb quality: East Yorkshire-based Other Lives Productions present “Brief Lives” by Patrick Garland from Wednesday November 2 to Friday November 4.

Starring Neil King (Polonius in the recent ERT production of Hamlet) as reclusive antiquarian John Aubrey, he takes you on a nostalgic journey through history and gives his unique take on days gone by, including all the bits the history books missed out on . . .

For instance, which globe-trotting courtier took a maiden’s honour against a tree? Which eminent scientist kept a pretty young wench to wait on him? And which famous playwrights didn’t only share a love of writing?

No one is spared in this stupendous series of anecdotes about the personalities of his time. Oliver Cromwell, William Shakespeare, Sir Walter Raleigh and even the Virgin Queen herself are not exempt from Aubrey’s acerbic and hysterical gossip.

Patrick Garland’s triumphant adaptation of the Memoirs, Miscellanies, Letters and Jottings of John Aubrey paint a unique portrait of the time and the inspired use of true theatricality makes this production a must-see.

Tickets for No Angel Uncensored cost £14/£15; those for Brief Lives are £10/£11. To book or get more information visit www.eastridingtheatre.co.uk or call (01482) 874050.
