East Riding of Yorkshire Council has completed major improvements to a section of the Rail Trail which links Beverley to Market Weighton, on the outskirts of Beverley.
Resurfacing has been completed on a 1km section of the rail trail from the cycle route alongside the A164 to the one along Grange Way, providing a link from Leconfield to the employment sites in eastern Beverley and the route out to Leven and Brandesburton alongside the A1035. The new surface provides a better facility for leisure users and commuters.
A new ramp from the rail trail up to the A164 has also been created.
The work was funded from the council’s Local Transport Plan budget, with money provided by the Department for Transport to local authorities to support sustainable travel.
As well as the resurfacing, vegetation along the section has been cleared, as well as scrub clearance which was needed to create the area for the new ramp.
Councillor Andy Burton, portfolio holder for planning, highways and transportation, said:
“We hope that these improvements will allow people to feel more confident to cycle out of Beverley in a traffic – free environment. The route will provide a good all year round surface, and families will be able to take younger children out on bikes, plus those with wheelchairs and pushchairs.
“I am sure this project will be welcomed particularly by those living in Molescroft, with its obvious benefits in terms of health and well being. It will encourage more people to get outdoors without getting in their cars.”
