Golden Year For Millers Day Centre in Beverley

A roof top garden which is tended to by an older person’s group at a Beverley based day centre has won gold in this year’s Beverley in Bloom Awards.

The elderly group, who attend Millers Day Centre, on Mill Lane, have been awarded gold in the ‘community garden category’ of the prestigious awards for their impressive roof top garden display.

John Ireland, team leader at Millers, said:

“The gold medal is a truly outstanding achievement for the elderly group and just goes to show that hard work really does bring results.

“They truly deserve this award for all their efforts in helping our roof top garden to become the attractive and much loved space that it has become.

“So many people who attend Millers benefit from using the garden, it has become a valuable and award winning space which we are incredibly proud of.”

The award tops off a golden year for Millers, which is attended by adults with a range of learning and physical disabilities, in the East Riding Day Services calendar of events.

In August Millers won a ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ style competition, hosted by Pastures Day Centre, in Goole, with their performance of wheelchair dancing.

In September a team from Millers were overall winners in the Hessle village quiz competition, while in October a team from Millers won the ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ style contest hosted by Woldhaven Day Centre, in Pocklington and attended by teams from across the East Riding.

They also raised £250 at a recent coffee morning and bake off competition held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

They are now looking ahead to their annual Christmas Fair which takes place on Tuesday 29 November.
