HULL : New Cycle Circuit Gets The Thumbs Up From British Cycling

Hull Culture and Leisure and British Cycling have hosted an event to discuss opportunities for the new proposed closed cycle circuit at Ennerdale Leisure Centre.

A range of cycling clubs and shops, racing and triathlon teams, schools and other sports groups including Fitmums all came together last night (Monday 5 December), to find out more about the city’s first closed cycle circuit.

Discussions included an overview of the scheme, along with detailed plans of the circuit offering potential users a glimpse of what will be on offer and how it can be utilised by the cycling and wider community.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Hull City Council Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said:

“This was an opportunity for British Cycling, HCAL staff and clubs and teams to come together and shape how the circuit may be used once open to the public.

“We are expecting the circuit to be in high demand and we want to make sure the facility is a success.”
John Mills, Director of coaching, education and development at British Cycling, said:

“It is great to see enthusiasm building for what is sure to be a fantastic facility.

“It is our aim to provide venues in which people of all ages and all abilities can build their confidence and bike handling skills, and the circuit at Ennerdale Leisure Centre will provide that for the people of Hull.”
Ian Butler, Founder of Kingswood Cycle Club (KCC), said:

“The announcement of this project could not have come at a better time as far as our club is concerned; the proposed policy of the track being used by a broad demographic compliments our club ethos of inclusive cycling perfectly.

“We as a club aim to cater to riders of all abilities so being able to use a purpose built facility to help build rider confidence in a safe, controlled environment is an exciting concept to ourselves.

“We also feel that on the flip side of that, the facility could be put to good use by our more experienced riders by providing them with a training environment free from outside variables such as traffic congestion etc.

“We feel that such a forward thinking project as this will only boost interest in cycling further still in the Hull area.”

Construction work officially started on Monday 5 December and the new facility is due to be completed by August 2017, offering a high quality facility that will benefit, cyclists, families and the wider community.
