New Year, New You – Adult Learning Course Guide Available For 2017

There’s never been a better time to sign up for an adult learning course, with East Riding of Yorkshire Council launching its new course guide for spring 2017.

Aimed at people aged 19 years and over, the guide is full of courses starting in January that can help East Riding residents improve their skills to get a job, gain a new qualification or learn something completely new.

For residents who are thinking about taking a course but need some ideas, there is a taster week from 9-14 January. Taster sessions are two hours long and aim to give potential learners an idea of what goes on in the classroom, what kind of things they can learn and an opportunity to meet staff and tutors.

Featured in the guide are a number of main courses that lead to qualifications, such as counselling, photography, supporting teaching and learning, maths, hair care,English and ICT related courses.

Shorter courses are also available, such as knitting, soft furnishings and quilting as well as favourite courses including pottery, crafts, drawing and painting and floristry. In total, there are over 120 courses delivered from one of four main adult learning centres in Beverley, Bridlington, Cottingham and Goole.

Sara Arnold, employment, education and skills group manager, said: “There’s never been a better time to start learning, whether you’re looking to improve your maths, English or IT skills to get a job or signing up for a part-time course.

“If you’re not sure that an adult learning course is right for you, sign up to one of our free taster courses and try before you buy! Either way, we would like you to join us and be among the thousands of learners who benefit from education and training with us each year.”

Councillor Jane Evison, cabinet portfolio holder for economic investment and tourism, said:

“Providing a quality adult learning service is a key priority for the council and allows us to support and grow the local economy by ensuring our residents have the necessary skills to achieve their aims and ambitions.

“The new course guide provides opportunities for people to learn and develop themselves, so why not take a look at the courses available and enrol at one of our learning centres.”

You can pick up a copy of the new course guide at any East Riding library, leisure centre, adult learning centre or customer service centre. Copies will also be distributed to local community venues.

Alternatively, you can download a copy online at www.eastriding.gov.uk/learn where you can also book a place on a course, locate your nearest centre and find out about help for learners with learning difficulties, financial support if you are unemployed or to access an advanced learning loan.
