A programme of exhibition and events hosted by Hull’s well known museums and Ferens Art Gallery has been launched to compliment the first season of the Hull UK City of Culture 2017.
With talks by famous historians, national experts, writers and broadcasters Hull’s museums and art gallery will bring a wealth of expert knowledge to the city.
The programme also features close up collections tours, special events, courses and workshops, along with music, film, creative and learning opportunities. The action packed programme for January – March offers something for everyone from children under 5 to older people, special interest groups and just the plain curious!
Heritage Learning Manager and organizer of the events programme, Jane Avison, said: “We want to shine a light on collections of international significance in 2017 enabling Hull residents to re-discover these gems and showcase them for visitors to the city.
“We will be going behind the scenes and deep into the stores with our digital program, enabling audiences to see and hear about objects and collections from the stores, some which have never been seen on display.”
This season’s highlights include TV presenter and Egyptologist, Prof Joann Fletcher who has published a number of books and academic articles and made numerous television and radio appearances for the BBC, National Geographic, History Channel, Channel 4, Channel 5 and Discovery. Professor Fletcher is especially well known for her work on trying to identify the body of Queen Nefertiti.
The first high profile event will take place on 26 January with Dr Chris Naunton, an expert on Tutankhamun. Dr Naunton will be giving a talk and a book signing session on “Tutankhamun: How did he die and is there still more to find in his tomb…?” Tickets for this fascinating talk by an expert in the field are on sale now.
Throughout the year, visitors of all ages and backgrounds will have the opportunity to delve into Hull’s history and explore the city’s rich heritage through its amazing collections.
Saturday saw the start our Hull Charters Exhibition and Events programme with a History Makers Children’s activity special at the Hull History Centre, followed by the first in our digital series on Sunday 8 January, where you can listen to City Archivist Martin Taylor talking online about the development of the Hull Charters and their importance to the city, currently on display at the Hull History Centre.

Print versions of the programme will be available soon and can be picked up at museums, the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull Tourist Information Centre, Customer Service Centres across the city, Libraries, Hull History Centre and a number of other outlets around the city and region.
Entry to the attractions is free however the programme includes a mix of free and charged events held across the city’s museums and at the Ferens Art Gallery.
