Now in it’s 10th year the Driffield Triathlon is fast approaching, and what better motivation to start the year than signing up to one of Yorkshire’s most loved pool-based triathlons.
Peter and Paul Mathieson, the “other brothers” in triathlon have been successully running triathlons across the county through Freebird Events since 2007, making this their 10th year in the business! A decade of sporting achievements and a pat on the back all round, for both the dedicated team and fantastic competitors.
The brothers have done over 200 triathlons between them, around the world. They have also coached countless numbers, including children, and still do a few hours of sport each week. To celebrate their decade in the sport they have decided what better way than to compete in one of their very own events and prove they’ve still got what it takes.
Paul, a runner before he became a triathlete, said:
“Sport is a fantastic way for everyone, whatever their age, to relieve some of the pressures of modern life, and many people get hooked on the three-sport triathlon.”
Hundreds of competitors are expected to descend on Driffield this May for both the adult and junior events. Both events are great for both first time triathletes and seasoned pros, and an important ethos in the world of triathlon is that everyone is welcome.
Peter, who competed in cycling events before getting into triathlons, said:
“The Driffield Triathlon has a fantastic atmosphere and we’re really looking forward to seeing lots of people take part.”
The pair have welcomed competitors of all abilities, from elite athletes to complete novices. “As long as you train and prepare properly, you can achieve an awful lot. And it really is great fun!” added Peter.
The brothers are also busy organising their other triathlons for the season, including the Ripon Triathlon taking place in July which has been awarded the England National Championships for 2017 and the GB age group qualifier for the ITU Age Group World Championships for 2017 which is set to be a fantastic event for the brothers.
