HULL : Children Can Now Experience A Day In The Life Of An Artist

For the first time children will be able to access a fully functioning art studio that can accommodate a full class enabling them to gain a real insight into what it’s like to be an artist.

Inspired by the Ferens’ outstanding permanent and temporary exhibitions the pupils will explore the processes and skills of painting, drawing, sculpture or printmaking.

Every child will be given the opportunity to develop their own personal responses and take a unique journey that allows them to develop their creativity without the restriction of everyone working to the same prescribed output or the fear of their work not looking right.

As part of Heritage Learning’s new ground-breaking education programme led by internationally exhibiting artists, primary school pupils will visit the newly refurbished gallery to get a hands-on insight into the world of an artist. Pupils will receive an interactive tour with a practicing artist to gather inspiration before exploring the process of creative expression, working on large scale and experimenting with a range of professional artist’s equipment, children will also be supported to discuss and evaluate their work with support from the artist.

Hull painter and installation artist Dominic Heffer will re-create his studio within the gallery space and will meet the first students from Clifton Primary School in Hull on Monday 23 January. They will be the very first pupils to undertake this exciting and unique opportunity to bring learning to life.

Councillor Terry Geraghty, Portfolio Holder for Culture and Leisure and Chair of Hull Culture and Leisure Limited, said:

“This is an exclusive and immersive experience offering young people a hands-on insight into the world of an artist and an art studio. Pupils will have the freedom to work with practising artists to express themselves and learn more about the processes and masters of visual art.”

Jane Avison, Heritage Learning Manager, said:

“This is a really strong programme, offering pupils something very unique, developed in partnership with the gallery. We envisage this to be a really powerful experience which will have a hugely positive impact on the young people, giving them confidence to enjoy their visit to a local and nationally significant gallery.”
