East Riding Campaigners have been overwhelmed by public support for their Care Homes petition which calls for earlier intervention by the Council when private care homes are threatened with closure.

Across the East Riding, nearly 1000 people queued at a number of petition points to sign the petition over a 2 hour period. on Saturday morning.

In the last 3 months, people in the East Riding have been rocked by the news that residents, families and care workers were given only 28 days to find a new job or somewhere to live when 3 local care homes closed suddenly . Beverley’s private care homes have now been cut from 4 to 2.

Beverley Labour’s George McManus said;

“I’d like to thank everyone who turned out to collect signatures in Beverley, Pocklington, Hessle and Withernsea on a freezing January morning. I’d also like to thank all those who stopped to sign the petition and share their personal experiences with us.”

“There is a crisis in NHS and Social Care due to government underfunding. East Riding officers do a great job but they intervene too late. We’re calling for early intervention to try and prevent closures.”

“It’s too late to lock the stable door after the horse has bolted.”

“In addition to the homes which have already closed, we believe there may be other closures in the pipeline. We’re delighted that people from across the political spectrum recognise the value of our petition and we’ll be out again collecting signatures in the coming weeks.”
