Sexual abuse and sexual violence is unacceptable in any form and as part of a national awareness week we are urging victims of such offence to get in touch as they are not alone and we will support them.
Detective Chief Inspector Simon Gawthorpe from the Protecting Vulnerable People Unit said:
“Sexual crime is awful in any form leaving victims deeply affected and often isolated and alone. We don’t want people to suffer in this way and have specially trained Detectives available to support victims, who are also helped by other professional agencies and voluntary organisations. This includes Independent Sexual Violence Advisors working closely with victims to work through their personal issues and ensure they have everything they need during a police investigation.
“The national media around historic offences and an increased trust in the way that police deal with sexual offences has led to a rise in reporting locally in the Humberside Police area, something I welcome. By reporting the offence we can take action to identify the offenders and bring them to justice, whilst ensure the victims have everything they need to come to terms with what has happened and move on with their lives.
“The National Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week is a great opportunity for not only the police, but the wider public to talk openly about the such offending, whether this is debating consent, discussing crime prevention or how offenders are managed when they are released from prison. This openness can only help establish crimes of a sexual nature are not acceptable and will wholeheartedly support us in taking action against perpetrators and supporting their victims.
“Finally, I would like to make a plea to anyone who is a victim of sexual offences to come forward and speak to us. We will support you and investigate the crime thoroughly. So please speak out by calling us on 101.”
