Hull 2017 Backs Exhibition Showcasing Work Of People With Dementia

A free exhibition taking you on a journey seen through the eyes of people with dementia and those who support them goes on display tomorrow (Wednesday 22 February) as part of Hull UK City of Culture 2017.

The exhibition, Hull, We Made it, We Did is part of The Butterfly Effect, one of 60 projects to receive funding through the Hull 2017 Creative Communities Programme, which is being delivered in partnership with the Big Lottery Fund.

The exhibition, which will be held at Kardomah 94 from 22 February from 12pm – 4pm, will use music, photography, sculpture and performance art to positively explore the lives of people living with dementia.

The Butterfly Effect will develop throughout the seasons with workshops, performances and exhibitions. A sculpture will be the centrepiece of each exhibition, symbolising the transition of those affected by dementia from diagnosis, to acceptance and positive living.
Celebrating lives and stories, the project aims to trigger memories while inviting people to question their preconceptions of what life with dementia is really like.

Shirley Cooke, a carer from The Butterflies, said: It’s been really exciting to try some new crafts, like the printing and crochet. I have lived in Hull all my life but I have learnt so much about the city that I didn’t know.”

Martin Green, CEO and Director of Hull 2017, said:

“We are committed to everyone across the city having the opportunity to take part in UK City of Culture. I am delighted that our funding has inspired people with dementia to get involved and hope the exhibition will help demystify the condition and break down barriers.”

Free tickets for the exhibition are available via butterfliesmlsg@yahoo.co.uk or 07821 519212 or at Kardomah94.
