Beverley RUFC romped to victory hammering Selby 45 – 18 in a match they controlled from start to finish.

Victory means that the Beavers have lost just once in their last eight games as they continue to grow as a side and are emerging as a real force in the league.

Selby started deceptively well and after five minutes of pressure on the Beverley line they were awarded a penalty which Scott Hunt converted to give them a 3-0 lead.

However after 10 minutes of even play Luke Hazell pounced on a loose ball and mounted a tricky run down the pitch for 70 metres to touch down close to the posts for a try which Phil Duboulay converted to make it 3-7.

A Scott Hunt penalty reduced the arrears to 6-7, but almost immediately Beverley mounted an attack down the left flank and a couple of forward drives resulted in Isaac Keighley going over for a try in the corner too far out for Duboulay to convert (6-12).

Beverley were increasingly dominating the exchanges now and the ever alert Jack Garvin linked up well with fellow centre James Graham to score an excellent try which Phil Duboulay converted to make it 6-19 at half time.

The second half started with Beverley coming out of the blocks in style with James Graham finding a gap as wide as the Hull Dock gates in front of him from a lineout won by the Beavers and he romped over virtually unopposed to score under the posts for Phil Duboulay to convert to make it 6-26 and a bonus point.

Luke Hazell broke out of the Beverley 22 and fed Craig Hancock who performed a wonderful juggling act in controlling the pass an made fully 60 metres before feeding Luke Hazell who touched down in the corner (6-31).

Selby briefly rallied and Simon Billingsley managed to score wide out (11-31) but within 5 minutes Jockey Holmes scored probably the try of the afternoon following an enthralling move involving nearly all the Beverley back line. Phil Duboulay converted and the match was now virtually over at 11-38.

However another smart break by Luke Hazell, backed up by prop Kris Renwick allowed the latter to score adjacent to the posts for Duboulay to convert (11-45).

In the last ten minutes Selby mounted a sustained but belated attack on the Beverley line and succeeded in winning a string of penalties. Eventually they manged to cross for a consolation try by Matthew Wood converted by Scott Wood for a final score of 18-45 to Beverley.

This was an absorbing game played in a good spirit and expertly refereed by an unobstrusive and sympathetic referee whose name I was unable to obtain unfortunately, but I hope that we see him again.
