Residents in Beverley will be able to claim two free bags of compost this weekend as part of the annual council giveaway.
Taking place on Saturday 13 May from 10AM at the council depot, Annie Reed Road anyone wishing to claim this freebie just needs to turn up and staff will pop them in your car.
All the compost that is being given away originated from residents’ brown bins that are used to recycle food and garden waste.
Councillor Symon Fraser, the council’s portfolio holder for asset management, housing and environment, said:
“The council has been running the compost giveaways for a number of years as a gesture of thanks to residents for their fantastic efforts in recycling their rubbish.
“The East Riding is now the second best authority in the whole of England for its recycling rate, and that’s down to the support of residents.
“And it’s great that the recycled garden and food waste is going to good use and returning to people’s gardens as compost.”
The giveaways end when all the bags have been handed out on a first-come first-served basis with anyone wanting to go being asked not to queue at the venues beforehand for safety reasons.
Compost serves primarily as a soil conditioner, whether it’s spread in a layer on the soil surface or is dug in. A garden soil regularly amended with compost is better able to hold air and water, drains more efficiently, and contains a nutrient reserve that plants can draw on.
On average 15KG of compost will cost you around £13 per bag so the other this weekend means people stand to save over £ 20, which can be used for buying plants or something else for the garden.
Recently, the East Riding of Yorkshire Council were nominated for a top National Recycling Award after the county achieved the second highest recycling rate in the country.
