Sergeant Nick Bunker, from the Community Cohesion Team, said:

“The physical and verbal abuse suffered by victims of hate crime will not be tolerated in Humberside and we urge anyone who has experienced it to report it.

“I want to assure anyone who has been a victim that you will be taken seriously and you will be believed. This is not something you just have to put up with.”

“We also actively encourage anyone who witnesses such abuse taking place not just to ignore it, but to get in touch.”

“If we are to tackle those responsible effectively, we need to know as much as possible about what has happened and we can only do this with the help of our communities.”

“We have done a lot of work as part of our Being You Is Not A Crime campaign to simplify how you can report these incidents. When it’s not an emergency, you can call 101 or report incidents online via the force website. However, if you’re in immediate danger, always call 999.”

“Our website has also been made more accessible for people from minority backgrounds, which you can now translate into a huge variety of languages.”

There has been a big increase in the number of hate crimes reported since the UK voted to leave the EU forcing police throughout the country to put measures in place to deal with such incidents.
