Free Workshops Offer The Chance To Get Musical In Hull

The Albemarle Music Centre is celebrating Hull UK City of Culture 2017 by opening its doors so that people can enjoy, experience and learn music – some for the first time.

The workshops – part of Hull 2017’s Creative Communities Programme – are taking place on selected Saturdays throughout the year.

Project organiser, Selina Slater said:

“It is great to see so many people coming into the Albemarle Music Centre for the first time and getting involved in music making. I have been overwhelmed by the interest in our workshops and the enthusiasm everyone has to be creative and try something new.”

So far people have had a go at singing as part of a choir, banging the drums in a carnival and even experienced what it is like to be in an Indonesian orchestra.

The next event on June 17 includes a violin workshop for beginners and the chance to compose new music with composer Michael Betteridge as he searches to find out what Hull sounds like.

The free violin hour-long workshops are at 10am and 11.15am.

A team of talented teachers will guide people through the basics which will include playing along to some great sound tracks.

There is also a free performance at 12.30pm by Ellie and George followed by a folk music workshop for instrumentalists and singers who have a bit of playing experience.

This is especially suitable for violins, flutes, guitars and voice.

Composer and vocal leader Michael Betteridge is working with people in Hull to create a series of special songs in his search to find out what Hull sounds like.

His hour-long workshops are also at 10am and 11.15am on June 17.

Each workshop will feature an hour of composing new songs inspired by audio recordings of Hullensians, as well as the opportunity to learn these songs as a choir.

The day will also include the Community Steel Pan group playing their uplifting tunes outside.
