A colourful and multi-cultural event will mark the first public event of the Lord Mayor’s civic year.

This popular annual gala will take place this Saturday (10 June), welcoming the new Lord Mayor into their role and is set to bring a blaze of colour, music, dance and fun activities to Queens Gardens in Hull’s city centre.

Councillor John Hewitt, the city’s new Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber will officially open the free event at 12 noon and will bring Queens Gardens to life. Featuring an array of multi-cultural performances and craft stalls including paper bead making and traditional African Head Scarf demonstrations organised by COOLture, the event will offer something for everyone.

There will also be fairground rides, circus skills, skateboard ramp and workshops and live music showcasing local bands. Mexican mask making, African Drumming demonstrations and workshops, arts and street dance workshops along with some street theatre and small animal displays.

Councillor John Hewitt, Lord Mayor of Kingston upon Hull and Admiral of the Humber, said: “I want this year’s event to be really successful. I hope that everyone will join in with the fun and activities and make this a day to remember, especially during our year as UK City of Culture.”

A full bandstand programme will descend on Queens Gardens featuring traditional brass bands including the Albermarle Music Centre and Northern Lights Girls Bridge offering an array of entertainment for everyone to enjoy.

There will also be a diverse range of dance and music performances including Samba, Indian Classical dance and Rock and pop bands.

People can bring their own picnic and refreshments will be on offer. The event is free for families to enjoy and takes place between 12noon and 5pm.
