School children in Bransholme are coming together to produce a time capsule as part of the Hull estate’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
The capsule will be buried for 50 years before it is opened again in 2067.
Children from Northcott Special School, Tweendykes School, Dorchester Primary School, Biggin Hill Primary School and Cleeve Primary School will be joined by councillor Helene O’Mullane at North Point Shopping Centre for Time to celebrate at 2.30pm on Friday June 16.
Also there as guest of honour will be the estate’s first ever resident, 86-year-old Margerie Ellerby.
Time to celebrate is part of Bransholme 50 – a year-long celebration marking the estate’s 50th anniversary supported by Hull UK City of Culture 2017’s Creative Communities Programme.
Organised by Bransholme Community Arts Enterprise (BCAE), the project aims to create opportunities for people from the estate to participate in events and activities.
Chris Smith from BCAE, said: “We are delighted with the response from local schools and community groups. I would also like to thank North Point Shopping Centre for their support of the Bransholme 50 project and for committing to hosting the time capsule.
“There are many other exciting opportunities happening in Bransholme this year that people can get involved with. This includes; films, exhibitions and public works of art marking local points of interest which will be a lasting legacy to the project.”
Ward councillor for Bransholme West, councillor Helene O’Mullane, said: “It is fantastic that so many young people from local schools are celebrating our 50th anniversary and being part of these special events during our special year. I am delighted to be part of it and I hope everyone will come along and enjoy the fantastic exhibition.”
There will also be an exhibition of artwork and photography at the event. Part creative, part documentary, created by some of the many Bransholme-based youth and community groups working with BCAE artists Frances Kelly and Wayne Wolton.
In the same week BCAE are teaming up with arts organisation Last Station to put on art workshops for the project, Design a Flag for Bransholme.
These will take place at Bodmin Road Church on Tuesday June 13 12:30–4pm and Wednesday June 14, 10am-1pm, and at BCAE’s venue at Dorchester primary School on Wednesday June 14 at 5-7pm.
These are free of charge and anyone can attend
Art work created at these sessions will be displayed at North Point on June 16 and the resulting ‘Flag for Bransholme’ will be flown at Bransholme’s fire station.
Martin Green, Director of Hull 2017, said: “Our Creative Communities Programme is taking Hull 2017 right to people’s doorsteps and ensuring that this amazing year can be enjoyed by everyone.
“Bransholme residents have an extra reason to celebrate this year with the estate’s 50th anniversary and I encourage everyone to support all the brilliant events being organised as part of Bransholme 50.”
