HULL 2017 : Moved By Art At Humber Street Gallery

Humber Street Gallery is looking for young people aged between 16 and 25 to take part in interactive sessions designed to give a greater insight and appreciation of the exhibitions on display.

through structured discussion and activities designed to allow participants to express their thoughts and feelings about each exhibition in a creative way.

The next session takes place on Thursday 17 August and will focus on the House of Kings and Queens exhibition.

This hard-hitting photography exhibition documents photographer Lee Price’s trip to Hull’s sister city of Freetown in Sierra Leone to explore the city’s LGBT community, which operates in secret due to homosexuality being illegal. On his trip, he encountered a young transgender woman who had opened her home to those who had been ostracised, creating the House of Kings and Queens – a place where people are free to be themselves.

The session will begin with a guided tour of the exhibition by Moved By Art’s James Nash, a poet and writer. James will explain the background of the pictures to provide extra context, along with sharing his own experiences of growing up as a gay man in Britain in the 60s and 70s. James’ aim is to contrast how LGBT people live in the UK today compared to those in other countries around the world, but also to show how far LGBT rights and freedoms have come over the years in our own country.

The second half of the session will be facilitated by Humber Street Gallery’s David Cleary who will work with the participants to create individual responses to the themes of the exhibition. David will be challenging people to create artistic responses using coloured paper collage and figurative drawing of the human forms in the photographs. The work will then be collated and exhibited at the gallery on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 October.

James said:

“The sessions are a great opportunity for people to gain a better understanding of some of the exhibitions in the gallery. We encourage people to not just look at the work, but to discuss it with us and with each other. Sharing perspectives and observations is a great way to appreciate art as we all take something slightly different from it.”

David said:

“Everyone is welcome at the sessions, but we’d really like to encourage those people who wouldn’t generally choose to visit a gallery to come along and give it a try. The sessions are really informal and are a great opportunity to really understand the exhibition.”

The Moved By Art session for House of Kings and Queens takes place on Thursday 17 August from 5pm-7pm at Humber Street Gallery in Hull.
