Newbegin House, Beverley’s only five star B&B, has been included in the Good Hotel Guide 2018 and, for the third year running, has won an “Editor’s Choice” award.

In 2015, Newbegin House received a “best newcomer” award. This was followed by a “Best Value” award in 2016 and now by a “Best B&B” award in 2017.

Walter and Nuala Sweeney, the owners of Newbegin House, were invited to a champagne reception at the Independent Hotel Show at Olympia in London, where they received their award on Tuesday.

The Good Hotel Guide is entirely independent and accepts no payments from hotels or B&Bs for inclusion. Newbegin House is one of only two establishments in the whole of East Yorkshire and the only one in Beverley to be included in the prestigious Guide.

This latest honour for Newbegin House comes soon after it recovered the number one position on Tripadvisor which it has held for the last six years.

Since it first opened 8 years ago, Newbegin House has received over 300 reviews from guests, 90 percent of which have been 5 star. Other current accolades include 5 star ratings and breakfast awards from both Visit England and the AA and a silver award from the AA. Newbegin House is also a former winner of the REYTA award for a remarkable night’s sleep.

Commenting on the latest “Editor’s Choice” award from the Good Hotel Guide, accolade, Walter Sweeney said;

“Nuala and I are thrilled to have received an award from the good Hotel Guide for the third year running. We are very proud to be included in the Good Hotel Guide, which we use ourselves when looking for somewhere to stay.”

“We are very grateful to the “secret shoppers” who must have reported favourably to the Editor of the Guide. We love living in Beverley and welcoming guests to our home, whether they are on a mini break from Hull or coming from America, Canada or Australia for a fortnight.”

“Beverley is a brilliant town, with lots of beautiful Georgian architecture, the Westwood, St. Mary’s Church, the fabulous Beverley Minster, excellent shopping facilities, a six screen cinema, East Riding Theatre, amateur theatre, loads of festivals, cycling and of course a great racecourse.”

“We also have the City of Culture, the Wolds, the coast and three wonderful stately homes nearby, meaning that our guests have a fantastic choice of entertainment. We are always striving to improve the accommodation and provide a warm welcome for our guests, and are delighted that some of them have stayed with us at least ten times.”

Mr. Sweeney, a solicitor and former M.P., and his wife Nuala, a consultant radiologist, are due to celebrate their 25th. wedding anniversary in December.

They live at Newbegin House with Walter’s mother Jane and their three daughters, Siobhán, Lucy and Hannah, all of whom help with the B&B when they are at home. Sadly, Walter’s father Mr. Paddy Sweeney, who was a well known veterinary surgeon and who also lived at Newbegin House, died in January 2017 aged nearly 96.

Mr. and Dr. Sweeney have carried out an extensive restoration project at Newbegin House, which was built in 1746 on the site of an earlier house. Including the adjacent former Coach House, the grade 2 listed property has 40 rooms including 13 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms and 5 cellars.

The walled gardens have been landscaped, with the original paths restored, and two ponds and a waterfall added. In 2015, a Georgian barn was added to the property and is now being restored for residential use.
