Humble & Soul : Turning A Front Room Back Into a Shop

Sisters in Law Mairi and Joy Simpson have turned sitting room into shop following an eventful trip to London that inspired them to bring something unique to Beverley.

Humble & Soul, a cash only store sells vintage, collectables and so more recent goods that you will struggle to find anywhere else.

Standing in what used to be Joy’s front room, the sister’s explained more about their venture, they said;

“Last year we went to London for a wedding. While we were there we went round London and were inspired by some of the shops we saw in places like Columbia Road.”

“They were small little shops that took cash only selling lots of nice individual things, we thought, we could do this.”

The pair who have known each other for 25 years made the decision on the coach back up north that they were going to open the shop.

Joy’s old front room was converted back into a shop front, some 20 years since the building was used for retail. Now what they have a hidden gem trading in shadows of Beverley Minster.

Joy, an artists who sells her work in the store said;

“It takes a lot of effort to fill the shop. It is not something you can just buy on the internet. We like to hand pick every item that we sell in the shop.”

“Both of us like vintage flags and vintage toys. We have always liked toys, Maira has collected bears all her life so we sell vintage teddy bears.”

“The name was chosen as we are a little humble place and the things we sell as they are vintage have a soul, a history, something about it.”

Mairi says that the response from people has been overwhelming, she said;

“Beverley needed a little shop like this. We started putting things in the window before we opened people have been looking. Since opening the response has been overwhelming.”

Located on Eastgate, Humble & Soul is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10AM to 4PM. They stock goods priced from pocket money through to collectibles worth hundreds of pounds.
