Newbegin House, Beverley’s only five star B&B, has received a gold award from Visit England.
Newbegin House, which recently won an ‘Editor’s Choice’ award from the Good Hotel Guide, has now become the only five star gold serviced accommodation in the whole of Hull and East Yorkshire.
Walter and Nuala Sweeney, the owners of Newbegin House, celebrated their success with friends and neighbours who joined them for drinks and smoked salmon sandwiches in the dining room.
Commenting on the latest award, Walter Sweeney said;
“Nuala and I are delighted to have received this award. We have had five stars for some time, and for two years have enjoyed a five star silver award from the A.A., but the gold award is particularly satisfying after spending thirteen years improving the house and trying to satisfy the needs of guests from all over the world.”
“We had 300 visitors to our Open Weekend in September, and were glad to be able to show them the completed landscaping works in the gardens and the detailed internal improvements which have been made since last year’s inspection.”
Newbegin House, a grade 2 listed building, was built in 1746 and extended in the early 1800s with a number of rooms added to the wing at the back.
It now has 40 rooms, including 10 bedrooms in the main part of the house, three more bedrooms in the Coach House, 9 bathrooms, three kitchens with two Aga fires and 5 cellars as well as a large walled garden with a waterfall, badminton court and a small orchard, a separate walled vegetable garden and various garages and outbuildings converted from the original stables.
“The house had been sadly neglected since the Second World War, and had been divided into flats, but we have enjoyed the challenge of bringing it back to life” Walter Sweeney commented.
“It has been a wonderful place for three generations of our family to enjoy living together, and we are very fortunate to live so close to the centre of the beautiful town of Beverley.”
“I would like to thank the builders, plumbers, electricians and other tradesmen who have worked so hard on such a big restoration project and also our cleaner Kayleigh McKenzie, without whose efforts we would not have won this award.”
