Beverley and Holderness Labour Party are putting forward an idea to relocate Beverley Police Station from New Walk to the vacated St Nicholas School site.

They say the idea has come as a result of campaigners who concerned about anti social behaviour are which is why they are lobbying for the relocation of Beverley’s police station.

Beverley Labour Party activists will be put their case to the Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, Keith Hunter at a meeting earlier in the week.

Speaking about the idea, Beverley Labour’s George McManus said;

“The Police and Crime Commissioner has stated that he wants to see the police operating at the heart of our local communities.”

“We believe that relocating to the former St Nicholas School site presents an ideal opportunity to support his strategy.”

“We feel the current site on New Walk is remote and that this new site could offer numerous benefits.”

“We’ve shown Mr Hunter the site and hope to develop our proposal further when we meet.”

The news of their latest plans comes just weeks after members of the same party, who sit on Beverley Town Council called for the school to be saved and turned into Youth / Community Centre.

Beverley Town Council decided at that meeting to investigate the possibility of purchasing the building, an idea that many councillors felt was unrealistic.

Mr. Hunter, who is also a member of the Labour Party is said to be open to the idea of relocating Beverley Police Station however how the move will be funded has not been made clear.

Rising crime and lack of police visibility in the town have led a number of people to coming up with new incentives in dealing with rising crime.

Last year Humberside Police appealed for volunteers to come forward and man the CCTV system, something that has yet to materialise.
