At a time when abuse scandals and in-equality hit the headlines, acclaimed author Val Wood is releasing her paperback, A Mother’s Choice.

The book tackles hard-hitting issues including poverty and rape in 19th Century Hull and Val will be signing copies at WH Smith Books in Beverley on Saturday, Feb 10 at 11AM.

The author says she is pleased that the paperback is being released during a time when women are speaking out about the injustice they have experienced.

Val said;

“We are witnessing a gigantic shift in the way women’s rights are viewed in the workplace and within society in general, it has been a topic I have spoken about at events including the WOW Festival as part of the Hull 2017 last year.”

“I’m very much looking forward to launching the paperback. The story was very well received upon its initial hardback release in November last year, with some people queuing for up to an hour for their book to be signed. I’m very excited about it becoming available to a new audience especially as it is released in time for Mother’s Day and during the week when the centennial celebrations begin of women winning the right to vote.”

“Although the plot is set in the 1800s, the historical-romantic novel revolves around some feminist issues that are, unfortunately still relevant today which is why I feel it is so important to sometimes use my writing to address them.”

“Women have been silenced for so long and throughout my career, I have used some of my titles, including The Doorstep Girls and No Place for a Woman, to break that silence and give these women a platform. People are now listening to the voices of women which is absolutely fantastic, as well as long overdue and I hope through my books readers are able to be, not only be entertained but also inspired by their bold and brave characters.”
