Before learning a skill, it is best to at least have a theoretical understanding of exactly what you are in for. When starting to learn a skill, a good idea is to check around to see if you can understand exactly the different levels of mastery that can be achieved, and what will likely be necessary for you to achieve each of these levels.

Start from the bottom, build a strong foundation, and use that to guide you in areas where you struggle or areas where you excel. Base level skills often come with the added bonus of being transferable. Understanding theory in one subject can guide you to an easier understanding of similar subjects so it can be a huge benefit to attempt to understand areas related to that which stands as your primary interest.
It is also important to understand that not all guides are created equal. Shop around first, as there will always be some which are higher quality than others, and there will always be some which are better suited to your particular method of learning than others.
Sticking to it
Few good things in life come easily, and learning a new skill is no different. The world’s best have years or decades of blood, sweat, and tears behind them. So, to reach their level, its best to try to follow their positive example.
