Television viewers will be able to see East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s assistant curator in the libraries, archives and museums service, Alfred Williams, based at Beverley and Goole, in the final of Mastermind on BBC Two.

Viewers will find out how he got on when the final is screened on Friday, 30 March, at 7.30pm.

Alfred won his place in the final by winning an initial heat of the popular quiz show, in which his specialist subject was Alfred the Great, and then triumphed in his semi final, in which his specialist subject was the life and music of French composer Erik Satie.

Alfred said:

“It’s something I’d been intending to have a go at for years, although I didn’t expect to get this far. It’s been fun, if occasionally terrifying.

“I chose specialist subjects which I already knew a little bit about, and which I thought would be fun to research. Alfred the Great, I confess, I chose mainly because I thought being Alfred and answering questions about Alfred was mildly amusing. Satie is a composer whose music I’ve always enjoyed, and also a very strange man who led a fascinating life in extraordinary times.”
