A new swim school in Dunswell is providing lessons for pre-school children and adult learners with exclusive use of a private pool.

The school is run by Suzanne Mathers from Sportsability which is a local community interest company providing inclusive exercise for everyone, as well as training for gym instructors, fitness instructors, personal trainers, swimming and sports within schools.

Having taught children to swim in private swimming clubs and schools for ten years herself, Suzanne wanted her team of highly qualified and experienced swimming teachers to provide quality personal lessons for children with a particular emphasis on 3-5 year olds and set up Sportsability Swim School. She says:

‘I found that parents are keen to get their young ones into smaller groups and private lessons to help build confidence and improve their swimming skills.”

“The pool we use is based within private land and has been hired to us by its very enthusiastic owner who is keen for us to utilise his venue in our quest to provide a unique and professional learning environment.”

“The fantastic facilities allow us to work with small groups of no more than six in the pool with two swimming instructors. This means they get really good quality teaching and more time for swimming rather than waiting at the side of the pool, which often happens with larger class sizes. All lessons start with a brief but fun talk on safety, an important factor to make them aware of the potential risks associated with swimming and water.”

“Quite often children with a disability or special educational needs find mainstream swimming lessons to be challenging but again we can offer private, one-to-one teaching. Our ethos is to treat every child as an individual, assessing their needs to provide a bespoke teaching plan.”

“We also teach adults who are either learning to swim or want to be more confident in the water. Public pools can feel intimidating and we have found that adults enjoy the privacy of the pool and improve much quicker with the one-to-one learning and support and non-intimidating environment.”

“The most important thing for all of our coaches is to develop strong relationships with our clients. Our approach is always person-centered with tailored lessons to suit their confidence and ability, there is no one-size-fits-all.”

“We have a really good team of tutors and assessors across the whole business which also includes gym instructors and personal trainers. Sportsability trains the trainers and is a provider of Active IQ qualifications which help young people to enhance their career and/or own business.”

The Sportsability Swim School is on Ings Lane in Dunswell. Current classes are on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For enquiries please contact Sportsability Swim School on 01482 229676.
