Hull’s brand new £36m venue will be officially opened tomorrow (Thursday 30 August) by music legend Van Morrison.

Van Morrison, who is 72 and from Northern Island has had a string of hits over the decades including Brown Eyed Girl, a song he wrote himself and which was recorded back in 1967.

The Bonus Arena is an adaptable state-of-the-art entertainment venue with a capacity of up to 3,500 people.

The arena was built by Hull City Council and is part of its £250m UK City of Culture legacy plan to invest in culture and the arts.

Councillor Stephen Brady, leader of Hull City Council, said:

“This incredible venue is a real statement from the council of its commitment to arts and culture, building on from Hull being UK City of Culture.

“There are few venues in the UK like this; it uses the latest technology and design to create a world-class entertainment venue that can be adapted to accommodate a wide-range of events. It really is a venue for the city to be proud of.

“The Bonus Arena will bring performers and entertainment to the city that we couldn’t in the past, which is incredibly exciting for both Hull and the wider region.”

Alongside the Bonus Arena, a new connecting 350 space multi-storey car park has also been created.
Van Morrison is the first of a number of high-profile events this year.

Dan Harris, General Manager at the Bonus Arena, said:

“After months of hard work from everyone involved in the project we are excited to officially open the doors on Thursday night for Van Morrison and to do it all again next week when the League of Gentlemen come to Hull.

“There are exciting times ahead as we bring the building to life.”
