MP Urges Residents To Join Closure Battle And Save Beverley’s Post Office

MP Graham Stuart is urging residents to support his attempts to save the Post Office in Beverley from closure.

Under plans put forward by the Post Office, the Crown Post Office in Beverley faces a very uncertain future and is likely to be relocated.

Over the weekend Mr Stuart joined local councillors to meet with members of the public.

Mr Stuart says that everyone needs the service. He also added that he will continue to support residents in their bid to save this asset for Beverley.

“Nearly everyone needs the services of a Crown Post Office. Whether that’s to return packages to online retailers, use the Passport Check and Sign service, or post presents to family and friends. There’s always a queue when I go in,” said the MP. “Hundreds of people signed the petition on Saturday morning. It’s clear that feelings are running high against this proposal.”

“I will continue to do all I can to support my constituents on this issue by lobbying the Post Office and also the Minister. I want to make sure we’re ready to jump into action against the Post Office’s proposals when the public consultation is announced.”

MP Will Personally Deliver Public Objections To Post Office Bosses

“We need to collect as many petition signatures as possible, and as many letters or emails as we can muster. I also urge everyone to write or email me with reasons why the Post Office should stay where it is.” He added. “I will personally deliver the pile of objections to the Chief Executive of the Post Office to make it abundantly clear why we need to retain the Crown Post Office. But I do need everyone’s help to make the best argument possible.”

Under plans, the Post Office on Registry Square will be relocated to the nearby WH Smith store on Toll Gavel. Bosses of the service as is the case for most public sector services are having to cut their cloth accordingly.

Increased business rates and rising costs are seeing Post Offices close at an alarming rate in the UK. In the last six months alone 400 were closed, with warnings more will follow.

Despite these issues, the boss at the PO, Paula Vennells pocketed £718,000 complete with a 7pc pay increase. This is in stark contrast to her workforce who took a 4.5pc pay cut.

Officials say that following the six-week consultation they will look to implement any changes in 2019.
