Hull-born artist Patrick Coyle will deliver a site-specific performance entitled Kingstupon Hull Stumption in the city centre on Thursday 25 July.
The performance is a guided walking tour of a fictional water-bottling plant, where Coyle speaks a futuristic local language to explain how the people of Hull have adapted.
The artist suggests that in this version of the future, water has become a scarce luxury item due to “radio sewage active tailings” having been detected in the Humber Estuary, which glows a luminescent brown.
It is part of the current contemporary art exhibition at Ferens Art Gallery: Is This Planet Earth? which features curious life-forms and strange landscapes. Every colour and sensation is heightened – and it is all a bit sci-fi. The exhibition includes sculptures, paintings, sound-art and videos, and runs until 28 July.
Patrick Coyle said: “This performance is a way of thinking about our relationship with natural resources through dark humour and experimental writing. Having delivered versions of it in London, Wrexham and Aberystwyth, I can’t wait to rewrite it for the city I know best.”
Councillor Marjorie Brabazon, chair of Hull Culture and Leisure, said: “The thought-provoking Is This Planet Earth? exhibition has been incredibly well-received since opening last month. It’s fantastic that Hull’s very own Patrick Coyle will be adding his performance to the exhibition which features the creativity and talent of so many outstanding artists.”
Claire Longrigg, exhibitions officer, Ferens Art Gallery said: “This will be a unique opportunity to experience Patrick’s work in the city where he grew up. The tour, which is set in the future, will encourage us to think about our role in the future of our city and the planet as a whole. Make sure you don’t miss this free event by booking your ticket now.”
Coyle’s walking tour will start at 8.30pm and last approximately 45 minutes, starting outside the Ferens Art Gallery. It will be wheelchair and pushchair accessible. Free tickets are now available to book through https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/kingstupon-hull-stumption-tickets-60520625821
