The annual event of the World Barge Pulling Championships is due to take place in Beverley n the coming weeks. Held on the Beverley Beck the event is will take place on Sunday the 29 September from 11AM.

Beverley Barge Preservation Society organises the event in association with Teamac. They are hoping to build on the success of previous years.

The Beverley Barge Preservation Society is a registered charity based on Beverley Beck. They operate three historic vessels the ‘Sun’ ‘Mermaid’ and ‘Syntan’ which was formerly owned by Hodgson’s Tannery in Beverley.

Explaining more about the event organisers said;

“Teams of four men, women, or mixed, will pull the barge ‘Syntan’ (weighing in at 64 tons) a distance of 200 metres. The goal is to do this in the fastest possible time.”

“While this may sound hard, once the Sytan is moving it is not so difficult. All competitors are rewarded for their efforts with a specially designed medallion.”

“Members of the winning team will each receive a championship cup and share a £200 cash prize.”

“Also a perpetual trophy will be engraved with the name of the winning team. This will be held aboard Syntan.”

Throughout the day entertainment will be provided with music, stalls, tea and coffee. There will also be a  Duck Race, and raffle, with a chance to win a boat trip.

Residents are being urged to pop for the event which promises to be a great fun day for all the family.
