Barratt Homes Donates £500 To Create Own Wildlife-Friendly Garden

Local housebuilder Barratt Homes Yorkshire East is celebrating its ongoing partnership with RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) by donating £500 to Cottingham High School for pupils to create their own wildlife-friendly garden.

The donation follows an activity at the housebuilder’s Poppy Fields development in Cottingham, which saw the students take part in an educational activity learning how to care for local wildlife.

The £500 will fund the school’s own wildlife-friendly garden to encourage and protect local wildlife in the area.

Last year, 20 year seven students from Cottingham High School visited Poppy Fields to take part in an activity to learn more out about how they can protect hedgehogs, birds, bats, butterflies, and bees in and around Cottingham.

Each student was then invited to enter a competition to design their very own wildlife-friendly garden, featuring essential elements used at the Poppy Fields development in order to help give nature a home. The winning design, which was created by Toby Irving, featured a hedgehog highway, hedgehog home, bee box, bird box, and bog garden amongst many other wildlife-friendly features – making him a very-deserved winner!

Linzi Bentley, Sales Manager at Poppy Fields commented:

“We’re really pleased that the donation from Barratt Homes is going towards the creation and development of Cottingham High School’s very own wildlife-friendly garden. Toby’s design was excellent, incorporating a huge range of wildlife-friendly features – he clearly spent a lot of time working on his entry! We hope that the students are inspired by their own wildlife-friendly garden and continue to care for nature both at school and at home.”

Peter Brookes, Area Improvement Leader at Cottingham High School, commented:

“We’d like to say a huge thank to Barratt Homes Yorkshire East for this generous £500 donation towards our wildlife-friendly garden at Cottingham High School, it’s going to be great to see the design come to life and watch the children nurturing it in years to come.”
